Johannes Brahms (1833–1897): Tragic Overture D minor Op. 81
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897): Four Serious Songs Op. 121
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975): Symphony No. 10 E Minor Op. 93
Brahms picked the title ”Tragic” for his Overture to emphasize the stormy nature of the piece. The Four Serious Songs are anthems of death rooted in Biblical texts that address the fleeting nature of life. Equally serious is Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, the first orchestral piece performed in the Soviet Union after the death of Josef Stalin.
Lively Estonian conductor Olari Elts is a frequent visitor at Tampere. Norwegian baritone singer Johannes Weisser is known for his impressive repertoire and strong lied performances.
The concert ends approximately at 8.55 pm.
