Robert Schumann (1810–1856): Overture from Manfred Op. 115
Alban Berg (1885–1935): Violin Concerto "Dem Andenken eines Engels"
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897): Symphony No. 3 F Major Op. 90
”To the Memory of an Angel” is one of Alban Berg’s best-known compositions. It is dedicated to Alma Mahler’s young daughter who had recently deceased. Brahms was a champion of traditional Romanticism but his Third Symphony proved difficult for the orchestras of his time. Schumann’s impressive Overture from Manfred is the concert’s opening piece.
Conductor Sian Edwards studied under Ilja Musin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and has led many of the world’s top orchestras. Virtuoso violinist Ilja Gringolts is also a student of the St. Petersburg Conservatory who plays a Stradivarius made in the 1720s.
The concert ends approximately at 8.45 pm.
