Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra: King of the French Horn
10.10.2025
19.00 - 21.00
Tampere-talo Oy, Yliopistonkatu 55, 33100 Tampere
There are thousands of horn players, but only one Stefan Dohr. The principal horn of Berlin Philharmonic shines as the soloist in a new concerto framed by Sibelius' Tapiola and Brahms' Symphony No 1.
Matthew Halls, conductor
Stefan Dohr, horn
Jean Sibelius: Tapiola
Steingrímur Rohloff: Horn Concerto, Finnish premiere (co-commission by the Tampere Philharmonic, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra & Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle)
Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 1
Composers are lining up to write for Stefan Dohr—arguably the world’s finest horn player. This evening marks the Finnish premiere of a striking new work by Icelandic composer Steingrímur Rohloff, co-commissioned by three orchestras. A contemporary critic once declared that if Tapiola were the only work Sibelius had ever written, it would still secure his place among the most significant composers—and he was right. The same could be said of Brahms’s First Symphony, a masterpiece that took two decades to perfect, surpassing all expectations and swiftly earning the nickname “Beethoven’s Tenth.”
