Stravinsky’s Petrushka leaps between styles, while Rachmaninoff’s symphony overflows with melody. In this concert evening featuring two works, the orchestra itself shines as the soloist.

Igor Stravinsky: Petrushka
Sergei Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 2
The resounding success of his Second Piano Concerto lifted Sergei Rachmaninoff out of years of depression. From this creative resurgence rose his Second Symphony—the lush pinnacle of his most prolific period. Its sweeping melodies sing of a love that soars freely and embraces the full spectrum of life. Between The Firebird and The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky composed Petrushka—a ballet about a puppet driven mad by love. Folk tunes, frenzied fights, and obsessively tilting rhythms make Petrushka one of orchestral literature’s most captivating works.
