Sergei Prokofjev: Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67

The musical fairy tale of Peter and the Wolf Op. 67 was written by the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. Written with young ears in mind, Prokofiev’s classic is as charming and entertaining as ever. The story tells a Russian folk tale where an adventurous boy enjoys his day on a meadow nearby his grandfather’s house. Suddenly a wolf appears from the edge of the forest. Peter defies the wolf with his courage and cooperation with his animal friends. Each character of this tale is represented by a corresponding instrument in the orchestra: the bird by a flute, the duck by an oboe, the cat by a clarinet playing staccato in a low register, the wolf by horns, Peter by the strings, the grandfather by a bassoon, the hunters by the kettle drums and bass drum. The tale is performed by Tampere Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and conductor Kristian Sallinen, with a narrator.

The duration of the concert is about 30 minutes. Recommended for over 3 years old.
