Edward Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius
Edward Elgar, who revived English music from its long slumber, is known for the Enigma Variations, his Cello Concerto, and patriotic marches. Yet his most powerful work remains The Dream of Gerontius, an oratorio-like masterpiece in which orchestra, choir, and soloists carry an old man’s final prayer through purgatory to heavenly peace. In Tampere, the work is presented by a stellar ensemble from the British opera scene, under the baton of chief conductor Matthew Halls.
