Grażyna Bacewicz, a trailblazer of Polish modernism, softened her style under political pressure — her neoclassical quartet shimmers with joy and the illusion of ease. Dmitri Shostakovich traveled to bomb-ravaged Dresden to write film music, but in the shadow of the ruins, he composed his Eighth String Quartet — a haunting exploration of the darkest corners of the human psyche. The dreamlike flute sonata by forgotten French Romantic Mel Bonis might just be the most beautiful piece you’ve never heard.
The concert is hosted by composer Minna Leinonen. The concert lasts about 2 hours including an intermission.
