Dima Slobodeniouk, conductor
Johan Dalene, violin
Sebastian Fagerlund: Drifts
Thomas Adès: Violin concerto, “Concentric Paths”
Sergei Rahmaninov: Symphonic Dances
Sebastian Fagerlund has become one of Finland’s most notable contemporary composers, known for music that evokes forces greater than ourselves. Drifts unleashes the full power of the orchestra, pulling the listener into deep, relentless ocean currents. Similar raw energy flows through Thomas Adès’s violin concerto Concentric Paths, which has quickly become a favourite among many top violinists. In Tampere, it will be performed by Swedish star Johan Dalene, making a welcome return as soloist with the Philharmonic. Sergei Rachmaninoff, then living in the United States, overcame his fear of the blank page one last time in 1940. Symphonic Dances, his final work, reflects nostalgia, longing, and the vivid presence of a life fully lived.
