Antonin Dvořák: Cello Concerto
Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 6
As a young man, Antonín Dvořák vowed never to write a cello concerto. Years spent in the United States changed his mind, yielding the all-time great cello concerto – a resonant symbol of longing and hope. Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir won the 2012 Nordic Council Music Prize for Dreaming. Its irresistibly unfolding soundscapes bathe in a cosmic haze where time ceases and landscapes shift freely, like in a dream. The evening culminates with Sibelius’s captivating Symphony No. 6.
