Afternoon of Fauns: Echoes on the Plains
13.12.2025
15.00 - 17.00
Tampere-talo Oy, Yliopistonkatu 55, 33100 Tampere
Some of the most beloved works arise from vast, open landscapes: Dvořák’s quartet reflects the peaceful expanse of the prairie, while Sallinen’s variations echo the deep melancholy of a folk song.
Béla Bartók: A Potpourri of Duos for Two Violins
István Szalay and György Balázs, violin
Aulis Sallinen: String Quartet No. 3, Op. 19, “Some Aspects of Peltoniemi Hintrik’s Funeral March"
Katri Nikkanen, violin, Lotta Laaksonen, violin, Kimmo Kivivuori, viola and Sampo Liukko, cello
Antonín Dvořák: String Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 97, "American"
Lotta Laaksonen and István Szalay, violin, Anne Korhonen and György Balázs, viola and Maija Juuti, cello
Boundless landscapes that spark the imagination thread through this program. Béla Bartók’s duos echo with the yearning tones of Hungarian folk songs, while Aulis Sallinen’s most celebrated quartet plunges into the mournful depths of an Ostrobothnian funeral march. Inspired by the vast prairies of the American Midwest and the melodies of Indigenous peoples, Antonín Dvořák composed his beloved “American” string quartet, now a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire.
The concert is hosted by composer Minna Leinonen. The concert lasts about 2 hours including an intermission.
