The world’s most famous passacaglia opens a concert that moves seamlessly from sonatas to soap opera. In Martinů’s hilarious suite, a pot and a lid are a pair, while a smooth-talking whisk and a flirtatious dishcloth complicate matters as the kitchen spins to tango and jazz. Duos by Poulenc and Pilss explore the playful side of classical music, while Eric Ewazen, in turn, draws symphonic sonorities from an intimate trio.
