Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47
Pyotr Tchaikovsky wrote his concerto for only the finest violinists. Alena Baeva is one of them, her magnetic presence making audiences melt. Having fallen into disgrace with the authorities, Dmitri Shostakovich returned to the spotlight with his Fifth Symphony. Once heard as strength and defiance, it later revealed a more ambiguous message: empathy for a suffering people. It’s one of Santtu-Matias Rouvali’s most celebrated signature works.
