Rouvali, Hadelich and other international stars light up concerts this winter

A remarkable line-up of internationally acclaimed artists will join the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in the coming weeks as the autumn season continues with a series of high-profile concerts at Tampere Hall.

Among the distinguished guests appearing with the orchestra are opera stars Karita Mattila and Tommi Hakala, conductors Mikko Franck and Santtu-Matias Rouvali, violinists Alena Baeva and Augustin Hadelich, and beloved Finnish baritone Waltteri Torikka.

The celebrations begin on 4 and 5 December with the Opera Gala concerts, held just ahead of Finland’s Independence Day. Conducted by Mikko Franck, the performances will feature soloists Karita Mattila and Tommi Hakala, alongside the chorus of Tampere Opera. Produced jointly by Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and Tampere Hall, the concerts also mark the 80th anniversary of Tampere Opera. The programme concludes with Sibelius’s iconic Finlandia.

On 11 December, the orchestra’s Christmas Concert will bring seasonal favourites to the stage. The evening’s soloist is baritone Waltteri Torikka, one of Finland’s most popular singers, renowned for his warm interpretations and charismatic stage presence. Audiences can look forward to cherished Christmas classics, including Sylvia’s Christmas Song, Silent Night and Sleigh Ride.

The autumn season concludes on 17 and 18 December with the eagerly awaited return of the orchestra’s Honorary Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. Joining him as soloist is internationally celebrated violinist Alena Baeva, who will perform Tchaikovsky’s much-loved Violin Concerto. The programme also features Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 1, Titan.

Halls and Hadelich headline TPO’s New Year Concert

The orchestra will open 2027 in grand style on 9 January when Chief Conductor Matthew Halls takes the podium for the annual New Year Concert. The occasion offers Tampere audiences a rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s leading violinists at close quarters, as Grammy Award-winning Augustin Hadelich makes his debut with the orchestra.

Widely regarded as one of today’s most accomplished and sought-after violinists, Hadelich appears regularly with the world’s foremost orchestras, performing in major musical centres from New York and Berlin to London and Amsterdam.

In Tampere, he will perform Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 4, a dazzling showcase of virtuosity and technical brilliance. The concert opens with Mozart’s spirited Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, one of the most celebrated works in the classical repertoire.

“It is wonderful that a concert in Tampere could find a place in Augustin Hadelich’s busy international schedule. Our audiences can now experience one of today’s most sought-after violinists without travelling abroad,” says Eija Oravuo, General Manager of Tampere Filharmonia.

“The Fourth Violin Concerto was Hadelich’s own choice of repertoire for this appearance. It perfectly highlights the qualities that define his artistry: phenomenal technique, profound musical expression and a magnificent sound. It is no surprise that he is often described in classical music circles as ‘a musician’s musician’.”
